16th June, 2010: Silent Hill 6 E3 Teaser Trailer

Despite a butt load of technological problems, and a wait that was just the teeniest bit too long to be kind, we finally got to see the teaser trailer for Silent Hill 6 at the Konami Press Conference at E3.

So what do we have? Well, not much. A prisoner. Escaped. In the woods. A female cop. Some blurry bad guys. The Welcome to Silent Hill sign. A creepy kid and a musical score not composed by legendary the Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka. (Wow. Those are some boots I wouldn’t wanna be filling.)

Other than that, producer Devin Shatsky wasn’t telling us much other than, um, it’ll be scary – oh, and that it’ll be coming to us on the 360 and PS3. But rather than me narrate, why not just watch it for yourself and tell us what you think?

4th May, 2010: SHHF Post-Mortem Q&A with Tomm Hulett

Now that Silent Hill Shattered Memories has hit most territories and many of us have had chance to spend some quality time with Konami’s latest installment, what questions do you have still lingering? What feedback would you like Konami to have? Are our theories about the game correct? What did we think of the story? What absolutely rocked … and what possibly did not?

Tomm, Producer of SHSM, has once again kindly agreed to exclusively take questions from you – yes, YOU – the members of SHHF. So if your question has yet to be answered in the interviews you’ve read to date, or you’re desperate to know more about this that or the other now that you’re all finished up playing, please leave your question here or send me a PM and we’ll see that Tomm gets it.

Please note: play nice. OMG UR GAME SUXX0RS is neither a question nor constructive, and as Tomm reserves the right to flatly ignore anything he doesn’t want to answer, it’s probably best that you frame questions politely if you wish to ensure a response. Therefore, please be respectful of this and think carefully about your questions!

All questions must be received by ]midnight 9 May (GMT).

3rd February, 2010: Akira Yamaoka Joins Grasshopper Manufacture

Akira_Yamaoka

1UP.com are finally in a position to reveal what we’ve all been speculating: now that he’s left Konami, where would Akira Yamaoka go next?

Akira Yamaoka, veteran game musician and producer of Konami’s Silent Hill series since the third installment, made waves early in December when he suddenly left the company he had worked for since 1993. What’s he up to now? This week’s issue of Famitsu magazine has revealed all — Yamaoka, alongside freelance Japanese game designer Kazutoshi Iida, has joined Grasshopper Manufacture, creator of offbeat titles like No More Heroes and Killer 7.

“I really love Yamaoka,” Grasshopper head Goichi Suda said in an interview. “Ever since I saw a video of Silent Hill 2 at the Tokyo Game Show nine years ago, I’ve always dreamed of working alongside him. That’s why I thought I’d invite him over when I started hearing rumors that he left [Konami].”

For Yamaoka itself, the jump to Grasshopper was an easy decision. “It was a case of really good timing,” he told Famitsu. “I knew about Suda long before I met him; I saw Grasshopper as one of those few Japanese outfits whose games can appeal to an overseas audience. I had a chance to meet him in Los Angeles and we talked about this and that, and once we started discussing how we wanted to do something creative for a world audience, I was hooked on the company.”

Yamaoka will concentrate on composing music for Grasshopper’s games to start with, although he stated that he’d like to use his “total sum of experience” to create games in the future. His first project: the game that Suda and former Capcom designer Shinji Mikami are working on for Electronic Arts, the details of which still remain to be announced.

Meanwhile, Iida — whose past work include titles like Aquanaut’s Holiday and Doshin the Giant — has already begin production work on a brand-new title, which Suda said should be ready for an Electronic Entertainment Expo unveiling later this year.

2nd December, 2009: Rumour Becomes Fact – Yamaoka Definitely Leaves Konami

Akira_Yamaoka
Further to our exclusive about Akira Yamaoka a few days ago, we can now reveal that a contact at Konami USA has confirmed that the story is “not wrong” and that Silent Hill producer and sound director Yamaoka definitely left Konami at the end of November.

Now we’ve had time for the news to sink in, how do you feel? Personally, I’m looking forward to Konami’s next move. Yamaoka is mind-numbingly awesome but surely no-one’s irreplaceable? Given the interest in the new approach to survival horror showcased in the up-and-coming Silent Hill Shattered Memories, this may not signal the death of the Silent Hill franchise, but merely it’s rebirth . . .

Silent Hill Shattered Memories hits retailers in the US on 8 December and on the 11 February 2010 in Europe.

30th November, 2009: Yamaoka Leaves Konami

Several weeks ago my contact at Konami Japan contacted me with some startling news. Now, at last, I’m finally able to exclusively reveal that – after sixteen years at the company – Akira Yamaoka has left Konami.

It would appear that he has left the company entirely rather than moving to another international division. As you would expect, there has been no formal confirmation from Konami, so right now this is an unconfirmed rumour – albeit one generated from a pretty reliable source.

To date there’s no news yet as to what Yamaoka plans to do next. Since leaving Konami he has been in the States and is now currently in Europe, seemingly on vacation.

I have no idea what this means for Silent Hill. I’m intrigued as to how Konami will proceed as I – and no doubt many others – find it very hard to envisage any SH game without Yamaoka’s trademark sound. I like to think that I have an open mind, but this is sad news, indeed. Part of me hopes that it’s a hoax!

What do you think?

Update 02/12 – a contact at Konami USA has confirmed that the story is “not wrong” so we can now confirm that it’s definitely not a hoax.
