Exterior. A man stand before a mirror in a public bathroom. He stares into the mirror, an uncertain look on his face. He sighs.
Man: Mary … Could you really be in this town?
(He steps out of the bathroom. The scene before him is truly beautiful; crisp forest, lake views. A woman’s voice is heard.}
Mary: In my restless dreams I see that town. Silent Hill. You promised to take me there again someday. But you never did.
Well I’m alone there now … In our “special place” … Waiting for you …
Man: I got a letter. The name on the envelop said “Mary”. My wife’s name. It’s ridiculous, Couldn’t possibly be true … That’s what I keep telling myself … A dead person can’t write a letter. Mary died of that damn disease three years ago. So then … Why am I looking for her? Our “special place” … What could she mean? This whole town was our “special place”. Does she mean the park on the lake? We spent the whole day there, just the two of us, staring at the water. Could Mary really be there?
Is she really alive … waiting for me?
(He walks away.)

Exterior. Cemetery. The man spies a young woman, crouched beside a grave. As she stands to leave, she seems called back and, again, sits before the tombstone. The man walks slowly up to her.
Man: Excuse me, I …
(The woman is caught off guard and lets out a cry. Then turns to see who has come upon her.)
Woman: Oh … I’m, I’m sorry. I –
Man: No, it’s okay. I didn’t mean to scare you. I’m kinda lost.
(The woman seems taking back by this comment.)
Woman: Lost?
Man: Yeah, I’m looking for Silent Hill. Is this the right way?
(The woman seem to be unsure of herself. She stutters on almost every word.)
Woman:Um, yeah … It’s hard to see with this fog, but there’s only the one road. You can’t miss it.
Man: Thanks.
Woman: But …
Man: Yes … ?
Woman: I think you’d better stay away. This…uh, this town. There’s something “wrong” with it. It’s kinda hard to explain, but…
Man: Is it dangerous?
Woman: Maybe…and it’s not just the fog either … it’s-
Man: Okay, I got it. I’ll be careful.
(The woman becomes agitated when James doesn’t seem to take her warning.)
Woman: I’m not lying.
Man: No, I believe you. It’s just … I guess I really don’t care if It’s dangerous or not. I’m going to town either way.
(The young woman’s tone changes again, this time to unbelief.)
Woman: But, why?
Man: I’m looking for … someone.
Woman: Who, who, who is it?
Man: Someone… very important to me. I’d do anything if I could be with her again.
Woman: Me too, I’m looking for my mama … I mean my mother. It’s been so long since I’ve seen her. I thought my father and brother Where here, but I can’t find them either … I’m sorry … it’s not your problem.
Man: No, I… I hope you find them.
Woman: Yeah, you too.
(The man leaves, heading in the direction given by the woman.)

Exterior. The man steps into a deserted town. He notices long streaks of rust-red blood on the road.
Man: Are these marks blood?
(Off in the distance, someone or something moves away off into the fog.)
Man: That shadow just now?
(He follows the shadow. Following another dirt road, he hears white static. Stepping through a boarded up fence, he finds a radio emitting the noise. Something moves in the background. A monster. The man looks around, grabs the only item available to him: a wooden plank with a few nails sticking out the end. He beats the monster the death.)
Man: Is it dead? What the hell is it? It’s not human …
(He steps out, remembers the strange radio.)
Man: Oh, yeah… (Radio static) … this thing broken?
Voice on radio: Ja………………………I’m………..e…Come to……………………………..s…….………………………..hing f……………..
………………………….id you k…………Jam……………
Man: What the … ? I’d better take it anyways, I might need it.

Interior. The man in is an apartment building. In a filthy, abandoned apartment, the man finds a dead body in the kitchen. He then hears vomiting. He opens a door to find a man doubled over the toilet.
Second Man: It wasn’t me! I didn’t do it!
Man: Do what?
Second Man: I didn’t do anything. I swear. He was like this when I got here …
Man: My uh, my name’s James, James Sunderland.
Second Man: Um…Eddie.
James: Eddie, who’s that dead guy in the kitchen?
Eddie: I didn’t do it. I swear I didn’t kill anybody!
James: Your not friends with that Red Pyramid thing, are you?
Eddie: Red Pyramid thing? I don’t know what yer talkin’ about. Honest. I did see some weird looking monsters though. Scared the hell outta me. So I ran in here …
James: Well, this place isn’t too safe either. What happened here anyway?
Eddie: Uh I, I told ya I don’t know. I’m not even from this town, I just, I just …
James: You too, huh? Something just brought you here.
Eddie: Um… yeah, you could say that.
James: Well, whatever it is… I think you better get out of here soon.
Eddie: Yeah, yer right. What about you?
James: I’ll leave as soon as I’m done here. Eddie…be careful.

Interior. James is in a similar, but different, apartment building. Wandering into the filthy bedroom of another abandoned apartment, he finds the woman from the cemetery, lying on the ground in front of a set of mirrored cupboards. She is holding kitchen knife in her hand, close to her face. She looks sad; she speaks slowly, as if drugged or desperately confused.
Woman: Oh…it’s you.
James: Yeah…I’m James.
Woman: Angela…
James: Angela…okay. I don’t know what you’re planning, but there’s always another way.
Angela: Really? But… You’re the same as me. It’s easier just to run. Besides, it’s what we deserve.
James: No…I’m not like you.
(Angela’s voice changes. She is disgusted.)
Angela: Are you afraid?
(Her voice catches in her throat and reverts back.)
Angela: I, I’m sorry.
James: It’s okay… Did you find your mother?
Angela: Not yet…she’s not anywhere.
James: Did she live in this apartment building?
Angela: I,I don’t know…
James: So, all you know is that she lived in this town.
(Her tone shifts again to suspicion.)
Angela: What did you say? How do you know that?
James: Well… I just figured, this is where you’re looking for her. How else would I know?
(Angela’s tone relaxes.)
Angela: Yeah…
James: Am I right?
Angela: I’m so tired…
James: So, why did you come to this town anyway?
Angela: …I, I’m sorry. Did you find…the person you’re looking for?
James: Not yet. Her name is Mary, she’s my wife…
(James takes a picture of Mary out of his pocket and shows it to Angela, hoping she will recognize his wife.)
Angela: I’m sorry.
James: It’s okay… Anyway, she’s dead. I don’t know why I think she’s here.
Angela: (Incredulously) She’s dead.
James: Don’t worry, I’m not crazy. Least, I don’t think I so…
(Angela gets up in a hurry, a new determination in her voice.)
Angela: I better find my mama…
James: Should I come with you? Now I know what you meant back there in the cemetery.
Angela: I’ll be okay by myself. Besides, I’d just slow you down.
James: Well, what about that? (he points to the knife)
Angela: Will you hold it for me?
James: Sure.No problem.
Angela: If I kept it, I’m not sure what I might do.
(James reaches to take the knife from her, but she recoils as he moves closer towards her. She wails, holding the knife at the ready.)
Angela: No!! (She looks at him again; becomes remorseful) I’m sorry. I’ve been bad… Please don’t…
(She sets the knife down on a desk besides James and exits the room. James picks up the knife and keeps it with him.)

Exterior. An alleyway in Silent Hill. James spies a small girl perched upon a wall: it’s the same child who kicked a key away from his grasp in the apartment block. She’s holding a letter.
James: It was you wasn’t it? You’re the one who steeped on my hand.
Girl: I don’t know. Maybe I did…
James: What’s a little girl like you doing here anyway?
Girl: Huh? Are you blind or something?
James: What’s that letter?
Girl: None of your business. You didn’t love Mary anyway!
(The girl gets up, runs away).
James: Wait! How do you know Mary’s name?!

Exterior. Rosewater Park. A woman in stood near the waterfront, looking over the railings. James spots her; races toward her.
James: Mary! No…you’re not.
Woman: Do I look like your girlfriend?
James: No… my late wife. I can’t believe it … You could be her twin. Your face, your voice… Just your hair and clothes are different.
Woman: My name is Maria. I don’t look like a ghost, do I? {She smiles provocatively) See? Feel how warm I am.
(She grabs his hand and places it on her chest)
James: You’re really not Mary.
Maria: I told you…I’m Maria.
James: Sorry, I was confused.
(He begins to wonder off, holding his head.)
Maria: Where are you going?
James: I’m looking for Mary? Have you seen her?
Maria: Didn’t you say she died?
James: Uh yeah…three years ago. But I got a letter from her. She said she was waiting in our “special place”.
Maria: And that’s here? Anyway, haven’t seen her. Is this your only “special place”?
James: Well, there’s the hotel too, I guess. The one on the lake. I wonder if it’s still there?
Maria: The Lakeview hotel? Yeah, it’s still there. So, the hotel was your “special place” huh? (She grins) I’ll bet it was.
(Disgusted at her crudeness, James walks off in anger. She chases him, grabs his arm.)
Maria: Don’t get so mad. I was just joking. Anyways it’s not that way it’s this way.
(James walks off in the direction given by Maria. Maria follows.)
James: You’re coming with me?
Maria: You were gonna just leave me?
James: No, but…
Maria: With all these monsters around?
James: No, I just…
Maria: I’m all alone here, everybody else is gone… I look like Mary, don’t I? You loved her, right? (Her tone turns to anger.)
Or maybe you hated her…
(James moves toward her, threateningly)
James: Don’t be ridiculous.
Maria: So it’s okay?
James: Yeah, fine.

Interior. Pete’s Bowl-O-Rama
Girl: So what’d you do? Robbery? Murder?
Eddie: Naw, nothing like that.
Girl: Ha! You’re just a gutless fatso!
Eddie: Why’d have to say that for?
Girl: I thought you said the cops were after you.
Eddie: Naw, I just ran cause I was scared. I don’t know what the cops are doing.
Girl: Well, if you did something bad, why don’t you just say you’re sorry? Well… I guess I run away a lots too.
Eddie: It’s no good. They wouldn’t listen. Nobody will ever forgive me.
(From another room, James over hears Eddie)
Eddie: Did you find the lady you looking for? What’s her name, Mary?
(James walks in and finds Eddie sitting at a score table, eating pizza.)
James: Eddie?
Eddie: Oh, ummm yer…
James: James. We met in the apartment building.
Eddie: Yeah, I remember, but…
James: Are you alone here, Eddie?
Eddie: Uh, no…
(James and Eddie see a bowling ball roll up, next to them. The girl was hiding, rolled the ball. She looks back at James and runs away.)
Girl: Bye-bye.
James: Wait! Come back! Eddie! Let’s go after her.
Eddie: Huh? Laura? But why…?
James: That’s her name?
Eddie: That’s what she said.
James: This town is full of monsters! How can you sit there and eat pizza?
Eddie: She said she was fine on by herself. She said a fatso like me would just slow her down.
James: Forget you!
(James runs after Laura out the front door. Maria walks over to him, out of breath.)
James: Did a little girl just run out of here?
Maria: Yeah, she was too fast for me. Aren’t you going to go after her?
(James runs around the building. He finds a small gap between two buildings than neither he nor Maria can squeeze through. They have to find another door.)

Interior. Brookhaven Hospital. James has followed Laura into the building. They both scour the huge hospital, until, seemingly exhausted, Maria stops and lies down on a soiled mattress.
Maria: James, wait a minute. I’m kinda tired… It’s just a hangover.
(Maria pops a few pills and attempts to rise. James stops her.)
James: You should rest.
(Maria lays back on the bed, the motions for James to lay with her.)
Maria: Mmm, so comfy.
James: I am gonna go look for her, for Laura.

Interior. Brookhaven Hospital. James finds Laura in a filthy hospital room, surrounded by teddy bears. She seems oblivious the the horrors she has seen.
James: Laura?
Laura: Huh? You know my name?
James: Eddie told me.
Laura: That big fat, blabbermouth!
James: How do you know about Mary?
Laura: What’s the big deal?
James: Why can’t you just tell me?
Laura: You gonna yell at me if I don’t?
James: No. I won’t.
Laura: I was friends with Mary… We met at the hospital. It was last year.
James: (visibly upset, he shouts) You Liar! (Remorseful) Laura, I…
Laura: Fine! Don’t believe me!
James: But last year, Mary was already… I’m sorry, Laura. Anyway, let’s go. We can talk about this later. This is no place for a kid. There are all kinds of strange things around here… I can’t believe you haven’t even gotten a scratch on you.
Laura: Why should I?
(They leave the room, walking down the hall when, Laura stops.)
Laura: Wait! Wait! There’s something I gotta get!
James: Later okay.
Laura: But it’s really important!
James: What is it?
Laura: A letter from Mary.
James: Huh?
Laura: I wanna go get it. Is that okay?
James: Yes! Yes!
(Laura runs to a door and motions for James to go in.)
Laura: Come on, hurry up.
James: Is it in there? (He walks into the room. Laura stays close to the door.)
Laura: Yeah. In the back.
James: What are you doing, Laura?
Laura: It’s further back. In the desk.
(The door slams shut. There’s the sound of a lock turning)
James: What are you doing, Laura!?
Laura: Ha- ha! I tricked you!
(From the ceiling a monster begins to stir. James is visibly shaken)
James: Open the door, Laura.
Laura: Why should I? I’m a liar, right? Want me to open it? Huh? Huh? Do ya? What’s the magic word?
James: Laura!
Laura: Okay. I guess I won’t open it. I guess I’ll leave you like this…
James: You snotty little brat! Open up!
Laura: Why, you, you…
James: Laura!
Laura: You, fartface!

Interior. Brookhaven Hospital, basement. Maria finds James.
Maria: James!
James: Mary? Oh, Maria it’s you. I thought you were… Anyway I’m glad you ok.
Maria (furious): “Anyway”!? What do you mean “anyway”? You don’t seem very happy to see me. I was almost killed back there.
Why didn’t you try to save me? All you care about is that dead wife of ours. I’ve never been so scared in my whole life! You couldn’t care less about me, could you?
James: No, I just….
Maria (voice cracking with tears) Then stay with me! Don’t ever leave me alone! You’re supposed to take care of me! (she starts to cry) What about Laura? Did you find her?
James: Yeah, but then she ran away.
Maria: We’ve got to find her.
James: You really seem to care about her. Do you know her?
Maria: I’ve never met her before. I just feel sorry for her. She is all alone… And for some reason… I feel like it’s up to me to protect her.

Interior. Brookhaven Hospital. Maria and James are inside an elevator when the radio crackles to life. There are sounds of audience cheering. It sounds like a cheesy television quiz show.
Radio: Hey there everybody. Thanks for tuning in. Welcome to another exciting edition of “Trick or Treat“! Either you answer the questions correctly and receive a great prize. Or fail to answer correctly and receive the punishment. All depends on you.
And our lucky, or should I say unlucky challenger today is James! James Sunderland! Are you ready to play “Trick or Treat”? Merry-go-round’, Haunted house, Roller coaster and yes cups. Silent Hill is home to a thrilling amusement park, that
Both children and adults love. The first question is: What is the name of this amusement park? 1. Fantasy Land 2. Silent Hill Amusement Park 3. Lakeside Amusement Park. Okay quickly on to question number two. Silent Hill witnessed a gruesome
Murder a few years back. A brother and sister were playing in the road, when they were attacked and chopped into pieces with an axe. Torn flesh, smashed bones, splattered blood and finally… what a terrible tragedy. What a gruesome end to such innocent lives. What was the name of the murderer who committed these vile acts? 1. Walter Sullivan. 2. Scott Fairbanks. 3. Eric Gein. Now, on to our third and final question: south of the lake is a deserted old neighborhood, called South Vale. From there to Paleville, the central resort area northwest of the lake. There is only one road you can take. One road and no more.
The third and final question is: What is the name of that road? 1. Bachman Road. 2. Rendell Street. 3. Nathan Avenue. Well, that is the last of our questions. Have you got it all figured out? If you know the answer, head to the storeroom on the third floor to collect your prizes! But, be careful if you’re wrong… Ha Ha Ha! Well, then everybody, thanks for tuning in. See you again some time. Bye-bye!
{The radio falls silent)
Maria: What was that?

Interior? Brookhaven basement? A frightening monster, the same that fought with James in the apartment building, gives chase. James plunges through the open elevator doors. He turns to find that Maria hasn’t quite made it. James tries to force open the doors and allow her through
James: Open up!
Maria: James! James!
(Something happens to Maria. She spasms, hurt. James is distraught)
James: No!
Maria: James!
James: Maria!
{She goes limp, the door finally slams closed. James falls to the floor, horrified. The doors open behind him. He gets to his feet and leaves. Outside, he talks to himself.)
James: Maria’s dead. I couldn’t protect her. Once again, I couldn’t do nothing to help. Laura has run off somewhere. Mary….
What…what should I do? Are you… Really… waiting somewhere for me? Or is this your way of taking….I am going to find Mary.
It’s the only thing I have left to hope for.

Interior. Toluca Prison, cafeteria. There is a blood-splattered body slumped over a table. James finds Eddie once again. He is sitting against a wall, on the floor. He has a gun his hand, waving it around. He speaks as though he is either, drunk or crazy or possibly both.
Eddie: Killin’ a person ain’t no big deal. Just put the gun to their head…pow!
James: You…You killed him?
Eddie: But, but it wasn’t my fault. He made me do it!
James: Calm down, Eddie. Tell me what happened.
Eddie: That guy…he, he had it comin’! I didn’t do anything. He just came after me! Besides, he was makin’ fun of me with his eyes! Like that other one…
James: Just for that, you killed him?
Eddie: What do you mean, “just for that”?!
James: Eddie, you can’t just kill someone, ‘cause of the way he looked at you.
Eddie: Oh yeah! Why not! ‘Til now, I always let people walk all over me. Just like that stupid dog. He had it coming too!!
James: Eddie …
Eddie: He-he. I was just jokin’ James. He was dead when I got here. Honest. Anyway I gotta run.
James: Your going out there alone?
Eddie: Yeah.
James: Eddie…

Interior? Are we still in the Prison? The tunnels are labyrinthine. James is impossibly deep underground now. He finds Maria behind a set of floor-to-ceiling bars. She is sat demurely in her seat, a bed in the gloom behind her.
James: (confused but delighted) You’re alive! Maria…! I thought that thing killed you! Are you hurt bad?
Maria: Not at all, silly.
James: …Maria? That thing… it stabbed you. There was blood everywhere.
Maria: Stabbed me? What do you mean?
James.. It chased us to the elevator. And…and…then…
Maria: James, what are you talking about?
James: Just before! Don’t you remember?
Maria: James, honey. Did something happen to you? After we got separated in that long hallway? Are you confusing me with someone else? You were always so forgetful. Remember that time in the hotel…?
James: Maria…
Maria: You said you took everything. But you forgot that video tape we made. (drifts off dreamily) I wonder if it’s still there?
James: How do you know about that? Aren’t you Maria?
Maria: (voice suddenly cold) I’m not your Mary.
James: So you’re Maria?
Maria: I am …if you want me to be.
James: All I want from you is an answer!
Maria: It doesn’t matter who I am… I’m here for you James. (she reaches up, touches his face) See? I’m real. Don’t you want to touch me?
James: I don’t know…
Maria: Come and get me. (provocatively) I can’t do anything through these bars.
James: Okay… Stay right there. I’ll be there soon.
(James exits).

Interior? Are we still in the Prison? The room … it’s hideous. The walls are flesh-like. It seems to breathe. There are portholes. Who is peeping in? James hears a woman scream.
Angela: Please! Don’t! No, daddy!
(James runs into the room. Angela is sitting on the floor, knees to her chest, completely terrified. In front of her is disgusting abomination. It is towering over Angela. James destroys the monster and upon the last stroke, the monster falls to the ground. James turns to Angela. He tries to extend a hand to her to help, but once again she recoils. She leaps up, kicks the dying creature three times, then grabs an old TV from beside her, and drops it onto the monster. She stands above the dead monster, and when she speaks her tone harsh and angry.)
James: Angela! Relax!
Angela: Don’t order me around!
James: I’m not trying to order you.
Angela: Then what do you want then? Oh, I see. Your trying to be nice to me, right? I know what you’re up to. It’s always the same. You’re only after one thing.
James: No, that’s not true at all.
Angela: You don’t have to lie. Go ahead and say it. You could just force me. (Her voice breaks) Beat me up like he always did.
You only care about yourself anyway. (She falls to her knees, gagging.) You disgusting pig!
James: Angela…
(James tries to touch her shoulder, but she raises her hands in protection from him.)
Angela: Don’t touch me!! You make me sick! (She gets to her feet. She is no longer scared. She looks at him, suspicion burning.) You said your wife, Mary was dead right?
James: Yes, she was ill…
Angela: Liar! I know about you! You didn’t want her around anymore. You probably found someone else.
(She leaves. James bows his head.)
James: That’s ridiculous…I never…

Interior. A cold refrigerated room. There are four bodies and Eddie, ranting, gun in hand.
James: Eddie! What are you doing!
Eddie: What does it look like? He always busted my balls. “You fat, disgusting piece of shit! You make me sick!”
“You’re so ugly, even your mama don’t love you!” Well, maybe he was right. Maybe I am nothing but a fat, disgusting piece of shit. But ya know what? It doesn’t matter if you’re smart, dumb, ugly, pretty. It’s all the same once you’re dead. And a corpse can’t laugh. From now on if anyone makes fun of me… I’ll kill them. Just like that.
James: Eddie, have you gone nuts?
Eddie: I knew it. You too… Your just like ‘em, James.
James: Eddie I didn’t mean anything…
Eddie: Don’t bother. I understand. You’ve been laughing at me all along, haven’t you? Ever since we first met. I’ll kill you James!
(With this, Eddie fires at James. After James retaliates, in fear of his life, Eddie runs into the adjacent room. James follow. Eddie’s voice echoes, seemingly from nowhere.)
Eddie: Do you know what it does to you, James? When you’re hated, picked on, spit on? Just ’cause of the way you look.
After you’ve been laughed at your whole friggin’ life. That’s why I ran away after I killed the dog. Ran away like a scared little girl. Yeah, I killed that dog. It was fun. Tried to chew its own guts out! Finally died, all curled up in a ball. Then “He” came after me. I shot him, too. Right in the leg. He cried more than the dog! He’s gonna have a hard time playing football on what’s left of that knee …
James: You think it’s okay to kill people? You need help, Eddie.
Eddie: Don’t get all holy on me, James. This town called you too. You and me are the same. We’re not like other people.
Don’t you know that? Let’s party!
{A fight ensues.)

Interior. Lakeview Hotel, Lakeshore Restaurant. As he enters the room, James is startled by a loud musical bang. Laura is peeking out from behind the piano.
Laura: Did I scare you?
James: Yeah, you did.
Laura: You’re here to find Mary, aren’t ya, James? Well…have you?
James: No…is that why you’re here, too?
Laura: She’s here isn’t she. If you know where she is tell me! I am tired of walking.
James: I wish I knew…
Laura: But she said it I her letter…
James: What letter?!
Laura: …Wanna read it? But don’t tell Rachel.
James: Whose Rachel?
Laura: She was our nurse. I took it from her locker. (She passes James the letter. Mary’s voice floats in the air.)
Letter: My dearest Laura. I’m leaving this letter with Rachel to give to you after I’m gone. I’m far away now, in a quiet, beautiful place. Please forgive me for not saying goodbye before I left. Be well, Laura. Don’t be too hard on the sisters.
And Laura, about James…I know you hate him because you think he isn’t nice to me, but please give him a chance.
It’s true he can be a little surely sometimes, and he doesn’t laugh much. But underneath he’s really a sweet person.
Laura…I love you like my very own daughter. If things had worked out differently, I was hoping to adopt you. Happy eighth birthday, Laura. Your friend forever, Mary.
James: Laura…how old are you?
Laura: Um, I just turned eight last week.
James: So Mary couldn’t have died… Three years ago… Could she really be here? Is this the “quiet, beautiful place” she was talking about?
Laura: Me and Mary talked a lot about Silent Hill. She even showed me all her pictures. She really wanted to come back.
That’s why I am here. Maybe you’ll get if you read the other letter.. The one…Mary…(She searches for the letter) Huh? I must’ve dropped it!
James: Laura…
Laura: I’ve gotta find it!
James: Laura!
(Laura runs away.)

Interior. Lakeview Hotel. It is where they stayed here. It is a large, open-plan room, with beautiful picture windows, devoid of the debris and detritus littered around the rest of the town. There is a TV with a VCR. James slips the video cassette into machine and sits back. First there is just snow, then a clear image of Mary talking into the camera.
Mary: Are you taping again? C’mon! I don’t know why, but I just love it here. It’s so peaceful. You know what I heard? This whole town use to be a scared place. I think I can see why. It’s too bad we have to leave… Please promise, you’ll take me again, James. (she coughs)
(The video distorts. There is static. The picture clears to show Mary lying in a bed. James bends over her, kisses her tenderly on the forehead. He stands up and she gently touches his arm. He suddenly grabs a pillow and presses down over her face. The image fades out, leaving only the silent snow. The tape turns off. James sits in a chair, head hanging low. Under his breath he says Mary’s name. Laura opens the door, walks into the room. She stands in front of James.
Laura: So there you are, James. Did you get the letter? Did you find Mary? If not let’s get going, already. Okay?
James: (He speaks slowly and sullen): Laura… Mary’s gone. She’s dead.
Laura: (furious) Liar! That’s a lie!
James: No, that’s not true…
Laura: (weakens) She…she died ‘cause she was sick?
James: No. I killed her.
(A long silence ensues).
Laura: You killer! Why’d you do it?! I hate you! I want her back! Give her back to me! I knew it! You didn’t care about her.
I hate you, James! I hate you! I hate you! I hate you! (With each word, she strikes him with her small fists. She begins to cry.) She was always waiting for you… Why…why…
(James stands up)
James: I’m sorry… The Mary you know isn’t here.
(Laura slowly walks out, slowly. As the door closes behind her, James says sorry once more, slumping back into the chair. From his radio, he can hear Mary’s voice.)
Mary: James…Where are you? I’m waiting… I’m waiting for you. Please come to me. Do you hate me? Is that why you won’t come? Please hurry. Are you lost? I’m here… I’m waiting nearby, James. Can’t you hear me? James… Please, James…. James…James….James…
(James leaves the room).

Interior. Lakeview Hotel. Reading Room. A set of headphones sit on a table. James picks them up, puts them on, looking out of the large window. There’s a bed floating in mid air. The headphones convey a frantic conversation between James and Mary’s physician.
James: Mary’s…going to die…? You …you must be joking…
Doctor: I’m very sorry.
James: But you’re a doctor. It’s your job to heal people! How can you just let her die?
Doctor: Please, calm down. As her doctor, I promise I’ll do what I can. But…there is still no effective treatment for her condition.
James: How long does she have?
Doctor: I’m afraid I’m not sure. Three years at most… Perhaps six months… It’s impossible to say with certainty.
(The conversation ends.)

Interior. Lakeview Hotel. A staircase: it is aflame. Angela stands above James on the incredibly steep staircase. James steps towards her. She looks delighted.
Angela: Mama! Mama, I was looking for you! Now you’re the only one left. Maybe then… Maybe then I can rest. (She steps towards James, who backs away from her.) Mama, why are you running away? (She reaches out and touches James’ face. She gasps). You’re not my mama. It’s… it’s you… Oh, I, I’m sorry…
James: Angela, no…
Angela: (exhausted) Thank you for saving me… But I wish you hadn’t. Even mom said it… I deserved what happened…
James: No Angela, that’s wrong!
Angela: No. Don’t pity me. I’m not worth it. (Suspicion creeps into her voice.) Or maybe you think you can save me?
Will you love me? Take care you me? Heal all my pain? (James’ silence tells her he can do none of these for her. The suspicion retreats.) That’s what I thought. James… Give me back that knife.
James: (whispering) No…I, I won’t.
Angela: Saving it for yourself?
James: Me. No…I’d never kill myself…
(At this Angela begins her accent up the stairs. A wall of fire blocks James from following.)
James: It’s hot as hell in here.
Angela: You see it too? For me, it’s always like this.
(She disappears up the stairs and into the flames).

Interior. Lakeview Hotel. Lobby. James enters the room and spies Maria. She is hanging upside down, tied to a rack, tortured. There is a monster on either side of her. He runs toward her, full of rage.
James: Stop!! Leave her alone! Leave us both the hell alone!
(Maria screams, but it of no use. She is killed – again. James falls to his knees. When he speaks again his voice is soft; slow. With each word, a growing new determination appears in his voice.)
James: I was weak. That’s why I needed you… I needed someone to punish me for my sins… But that’s all over now… I know the truth… Now it’s time to end this.
(He rises with determination to his feet)

Interior. Lakeview Hotel. A corridor. James is running down the seemingly unending passageway. Mary’s voice, a recalled conversation, floats around him.
James: Mary?
Mary: (cold) What do you want, James?
James: I, uh I brought you flowers.
Mary: Flowers? I don’t want any damn flowers. Just go home already.
James: Mary, what are you saying?
Mary: Look! I’m disgusting! I don’t deserve flowers. Between the disease and the drugs, I look like a monster. Well, what are you looking at? Get the hell outta here! Leave me alone already! I’m no use to anyone. I’ll be dead soon anyway. Maybe today, maybe tomorrow… It’d be easier if they just kill me. But I guess the hospital is making a nice profit off me. They want to keep me alive… Are you still here! I told you to go! Are you deaf?! Don’t come back.(Her voice breaks) James… Wait… Please, don’t go… Stay with me. Don’t leave me alone. I didn’t mean what I said. Please James… Tell me I’ll be okay. Tell me I’m not going to die. Help me…
(James exits the passageway.)

Leave Ending. Interior. A room with grates and steel and rust. Maria, dressed as Mary, looks out from a window. As James approaches her, he realises that, again, he has mistaken Maria for Mary.
James: Mary?
Maria: When will you ever stop making that mistake? Mary’s dead. You killed her.
James: Maria… It’s you… But I don’t need you anymore.
Maria: What! You must be joking! But I can be yours… I’ll be here for you forever. And I’ll never yell and you or make you feel bad. That’s what you wanted. I’m different then Mary. How can you just throw me away?
James: I understand now. It’s time to end this nightmare.
Maria: No! I won’t let you! You deserve to die too, James!
(Maria transforms into a hideous demon. A battle ensues. James succeeds. Cut to a small room, where Mary lies upon a bed, James sitting in a chair beside her).
James: Mary…
Mary: James…
James: Forgive me…
Mary: I told you I wanted to die. I wanted the pain to end.
James: That’s why I did it, honey. I couldn’t watch you suffer. No! That’s not true. You also said you didn’t want to die. The truth is I hated you. I wanted you outta the way. I wanted my life back…
Mary: If that were true… Then why do you look so sad?
James: Mary…
Mary: James… Please… Please do something for me. Go on with your life. (She hands him a letter. Cut to James leaving the town, back through the Cemetery. Mary’s voice reads the letter).
Mary: In my restless dreams. I see that town. Silent Hill. You promised to take me there again someday. But you never did.
Well I’m alone there now… In our “special place”… Waiting for you… Waiting for you to come to see me. But you never do.
So I wait. Wrapped in my cocoon of pain and loneliness. I know I’ve done a terrible thing to you. Something you’ll never forgive me for. I wish I could change that. But I can’t. I feel so pathetic and ugly laying here. Waiting for you. Every day I stare up at the cracks in the ceiling. And all I can think about is how unfair it all is. The doctor came today. He told me I could go home for a short stay. It’s not that I am getting better. It’s just that this could be my last chance. I think you know what I mean… Even so.. I am glad to be coming home. I’ve missed you terribly. But I am afraid. James. I am afraid you don’t really want me to come home. Every time you come to see me, I can tell how hard it is on you. I don’t know if you hate me or pity me. Or maybe I just disgust you. I am sorry about that. When I first learned I was going to die. I just didn’t want to accept it.
I was so angry all the time. I struck out every one I loved most – especially you James. That’s why I understand if you do hate me. I want you to know this James… I’ll always love you. Even thought our life together had to end like this. I still wouldn’t trade it for the world. We had some wonderful years together. Well this letter has gone on too long. So I’ll say goodbye. I told the nurse to give this to you after I am gone. That means that as you read this… I am already dead. I can’t tell you to remember me, but I can’t bear for you to forget me. These last few years since I became ill… I am so sorry for what I did to you. Did to us. You’ve given me so much and I haven’t been able to return a single thing. That’s why I want you to live for yourself now Do what’s best you, James.. James… You made me happy.
(The game ends with Laura running through the cemetery, James in her wake.)

Maria Ending. Interior. A room with grates and steel and rust. Mary is sat on a bed. She looks up as he approaches.
Mary: James, I’ve been waiting.
James: Mary… Sorry I took so long.
Mary: Didn’t you want to see me?
James: Yes, I wanted to see you. Even an illusion of you… That’s why I can here.
Mary: That’s not true is it? You killed me…
James: I couldn’t watch you suffer.
Mary: Don’t make excuses. (She coughs) I know I was a burden on you. You must have hated me. That’s why you got rid of me.
James: It’s true…I may have had some of those feelings. It was a long three years… I was… tired.
Mary: Is that why you needed this “Maria” person? (She becomes angry) James, did you really think I could forgive you for what you did?
(Maria transforms into a hideous demon. A battle ensues. James succeeds. Cut to James overlooking the railings in Rosewater Park. Maria’s voice disturbs him).
Maria: You killed Mary again?
James: That wasn’t Mary. Mary’s dead. That was just something I… Maria!
Maria: What James?
James: Maria. I want you… I want you with me…
Maria: Are you sure?
James: C’mon, let’s get out of here.
Maria: What about Mary?
James: It’s okay. I have you.
(Cut to the lookout point where the game begin. Mary’s voice floats over.)
Mary: In my restless dreams. I see that town. Silent Hill. You promised to take me there again someday. But you never did.

(The game ends with James and Maria walking towards his car. She coughs.)
James: You’d better do something about that cough …

Water Ending. Interior. A room with grates and steel and rust. Maria, dressed as Mary, looks out from a window. As James approaches her, he realises that, again, he has mistaken Maria for Mary.
James: Mary…?
Maria: Wrong again. Mary’s dead. You killed her.
James: Maria. Maria, I’m finished with you.
Maria: What do you mean? But I can be yours… I’ll be here for you forever. And I’ll never yell at you or make you feel bad. That’s what you wanted.
James: Now I understand. The problem is you’re not Mary.
Maria: No James. I wont let you! I’ll never let you have your Mary back!
(Maria transforms into a hideous demon. A battle ensues. James succeeds. Cut to a small room, where Mary lies upon a bed, James sitting in a chair beside her).
James: Mary…
Mary: James… (coughs)
James: Forgive me…
Mary: I told you I wanted to die. I wanted the pain to end.
James: That’s why I did it, honey. I couldn’t watch you suffer. No, that’s not the whole truth. You also said you didn’t want to die. The truth is… Part of me hate you for taking away my life…
Mary: You killed me and now your suffering for it. It’s enough, James. (coughs)
James: Mary…
(Mary’s voice becomes that of a terrified child. She calls out James’ name; she dies. James picks her up in his arms and carries her out of the room. The screen go black, but you can hear a car door close and from the darkness hear James talking.)
James: Now I understand the real reason I came to this town.
(You hear a car start up, then put into gear.)
James: I wonder… What was I afraid of? Without you, Mary… I’ve got nothing…
(You can hear James floor the gas pedal, a car screaming forward, hitting high speed, the n… silence. And in the silence you hear James.)
James: Now, we can be together…
(We see nothing but water. Mary’s voice floats over.)
Mary: In my restless dreams. I see that town. Silent Hill. You promised to take me there again someday. But you never did.

Rebirth Ending. Interior. A room with grates and steel and rust. Maria, dressed as Mary, looks out from a window. As James approaches her, he looks angry. She’s shocked at his reaction.
Maria: James.
James: Maria. I’m finished with you.
Maria: What!? But I am what you wanted. Mary’s dead. Don’t you understand? She’s not coming back! But I can be yours… I’ll be here for you forever. I’ll never hurt you like she did! So, why don’t you want me?!
James: Because you’re not Mary. Without Mary, I just can’t go on.
Maria: Oh…James. C’mon, James. You must be joking.
(Maria transforms into a hideous demon. A battle ensues. James succeeds. Cut to James rowing across the lake).
James: Mary. You look so peaceful. Forgive me for waking you. But without you, I just can’t go on. I can’t live without you, Mary. This town, Silent Hill…. The Old Gods haven’t left this place…. And they still grant power to those who venerate them…. Power to defy even death….
(He reaches the dock of small island in the centre of the lake.)
James: Ah… Mary.
(James continues to row, until he eventually disappears.)

The Dog Ending. James walks into a highly technical-looking room. A small dog is balancing on a rolling stool. He points at the dog.
James: So it was all your work! (He falls to his hands and knees. The dog walks over and starts licking and sniffing James’ face.)
